“…. for they are … wondered at …” (Zechariah 3:8)
“… and the children the Lord has given me! We are for signs and wonders …”
(Isaiah 8:18)
I love a good allegory, and Life’s User Manual (the Bible) is a book of literal and allegorical truths. Each time a lover of it thinks they’ve nailed the essence of a verse, topic, or concept, careful and Spirit-directed investigation uncovers greater depths and more profound nuances than previously discovered, which always exhilarate and expand the adventurous heart and mind. Many of us are drawn to the mystical concept of superheroes because it mimics the real-world phenomenon of Jesus Christ, the ultimate existential Savior. I love a clean, riveting superhero storyline that delivers inspirational and emulative messages without dabbling into abysmally dark themes and endless revenue-targeting sequels. The unending sagas lead to my loss of interest after the first few releases of such blockbuster series.
Not so with Wonder Woman (yet). She was one of my favorite superheroes as a child and remains so today. She possesses a strong sense of responsibility, valor, purpose, selflessness, appropriate use of superpowers, an aversion to evil, oppression, manipulative diplomacy, and a strong stance for justice and righteousness. She refuses to settle for the status quo or cower to the tyranny of popular opinion. She, alongside Superman and Captain America, have most beautifully displayed these traits in their on-screen character portrayals, and the trio are my favorites of the metaverse heroes.
What makes her so noteworthy, and why would a fantastical character merit mention in today’s real-life discussion? Here are a few reasons that come to mind.
Beauty As A Virtue, Not As A Vice

“Women must not let their beauty be something external. Beauty doesn’t come from hairstyles, gold jewelry, or clothes. Rather, beauty is something internal that can’t be destroyed. Beauty expresses itself in a gentle and approachable attitude which God considers precious. After all, this is how holy women who had confidence in God expressed their beauty in the past …” (1 Peter 3:3-5)
“She dresses with strength and nobility (honor, dignity) …” (Proverbs 10:25)
Wonder Woman’s self-confidence and self-worth are founded on her Father’s (God’s) love for her and her high esteem in His eyes (in my mind, her goddess mother Hippolyta represents God), not merely on her good looks. Her strength of character lends itself to her desirability and attractiveness, which serve as additional boosts (not the primary basis) to her self-confidence.
Her royal bloodline confers upon her a natural elegance and regal carriage that instinctively repel any mediocrity in presentation. Dressing beneath her royal station devalues her worth to that of a mere object of desire – one easily used and discarded on a moment’s whim. She understands that her power for influence is to be wielded for good and refuses to sink to the level of feminine wiles as a tool for control and manipulation. Her womanhood isn’t to allure for personal gain or to attain a sense of self-importance or dignity.
Validating Valor

“A woman of valor, who can find? Her worth is far beyond that of rubies …” (Proverbs 10:31)
The most popular biblical descriptive of the consummate female uses words such as “valor,” “accomplished,” “strong,” “possessing exceptional wisdom and virtue,” etc. in describing the real-time versions of this woman. Undoubtedly valiant, she cultivates the courage and conviction needed to confront the difficulties that must be conquered. This valor distinguishes her from the pack. She is in plain sight in the daily life of the cosmos, unassuming and often unnoticed and underrated, yet fully aware of the undeniable value she brings to her world and those around her through this and other defining characteristics.
Weaponized Womanhood

“The weapons we use in our fight are not made by humans. Rather, they are powerful weapons from God. With them we destroy …” (2 Corinthians 10:4)
“Put on all the armor that God supplies. In this way you can take a stand against the devil’s strategies. This is not a wrestling match against a human opponent. We are wrestling with rulers, authorities, the powers who govern this world of darkness, and spiritual forces that control evil in the heavenly world. For this reason, take up all the armor that God supplies. Then you will be able to take a stand during these evil days. Once you have overcome all obstacles, you will be able to stand your ground.” (Ephesians 6:11-13)
In her everyday, ordinary life, Wonder Woman moonlights as Diana Prince, a brilliant cultural anthropologist, archaeologist, and curator of ancient weapons in one of the most famous Museums in the world. But her everyday, extraordinary calling to save those in her sphere of influence reveals a battle-ready lady who understands that her prominence, brilliance, beauty, and achievements are simply tools she can leverage to optimize her assignment. Her real strength and acclaim lie in equipping herself with the spiritual armor bestowed and available to her so that she can effectively engage and conquer the forces of darkness that threaten her world and loved ones.
From head to toe, this woman clothes herself with strength well beyond her natural capabilities.
Witty, Non-Wily Words & Ways

“When she speaks, her words are wise, and she gives instructions with kindness.” (Proverbs 31:26)
“Your words should always be gracious and tastefully delivered, so that they evoke an appropriate response in everyone listening.” (Colossians 4:6)
Wonder Woman is not given to malicious gossip, mindless chatter, or an inordinate interest in the affairs of others. She does not scheme or manipulate to try to get her way. She is appropriately conversational or silent, amusing or serious as the situation demands; a woman whose carefully thought-out words are witty, weighty, wise, and sincere, and whose genuine kindness and compassion are reflected in all she says and does. Her naturally exuding grace and gravitas are apparent to all.
Dear woman, God created you to be a marvelous reflection of Himself in the way you live, work, relate, excel, and influence those He has placed in your life. Everyone you wife, mother, nurture, support, advise, sponsor, teach, or assist in any way is to benefit from the greatness He placed in you. He created you to be wondered at, irrevocable evidence of His existence, grace, and power. Are the people in your life maximally enjoying those beauties in you? Are you actively pursuing that call and allowing God’s Spirit to work in you to evolve into that glorious version of yourself?
Lovely lady of the hour, are YOU a Wonder Woman (as defined and refined by your Creator), or are you a wondering woman – unsure of who you are, what you’re called to do, and the great abilities and potential within you?
