It is not unusual for a song to grip my heart and be placed on auto-repeat for months during my times of worship. Today’s spotlight song is one of such. Each time I listen to it, I am reminded of my singular life’s purpose – to worship the one true God with everything I have and make Him accurately known in all that I am and do. This truth is so simple but profound, and its perspicuity only adds layers to its profundity.
For me, this thought underscores the power of “One.“ In most aspects, life is most productive, impactful, and enduring when a sole focus is created, multiplied, and diversified; for instance, drug companies usually manufacture and provide various drugs, drug products, and services. Such companies are not typically involved in the production of cars, baby clothes, and ironing boards as part of the same brand.
The Bible reveals this concept as a dogged singularity of focus and energy toward the things that matter most. While there are many such references and contexts, I want to highlight the more obvious ones, collectively dubbed the “One Thing.“
One Thing I ask from the Lord,
this only do I seek:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life,
to gaze on the beauty of the Lord
and to seek Him in His temple.
(Psalm 27:4)
… only One Thing is needed, and Mary has wisely chosen it for herself, and it cannot be taken away from her.”
(Luke 10:42)
No, dear brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself to have arrived, but I focus on this One Thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.
Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One Thing you lack,” He said. “Go, sell everything you have and give it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me.”
(Mark 10:21)
But seek this One Thing above all – His kingdom and His righteousness, and everything else will be given to you as well.
(Matthew 6:33)
