“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.” (Matthew 7:24-25)
Love is a universal tenet of human existence, transcending time, culture, language, societal norms, and other facets of life. From the youngest to the oldest, the richest and the poorest, the educated and the uneducated, elite to the ordinary, extrovert to the introvert, expressive and the stoic – every person has a fundamental need to love and be loved. Regardless of whether that need has been identified, honed, or acknowledged, the saintliest saint and the worst of sinners both require and secretly crave this basic building block of human existence. In other words, an atom is to matter what love is to life.
Anyone privileged to have a personal relationship with God through His Son Jesus Christ understands the fundamental fact that God passionately, selflessly and sacrificially loves each and every one of us; a truth so profound and too mind-boggling for a total depth of comprehension.1 Beyond this, God is the very essence, source and definition of love.2-3 As such, His standards, counsel and instructions on how to thrive in any type of love relationship (romantic, platonic, friendship, familial, professional, etc.) are foundational to its success and are the driving force behind all of its benefits and effects. Love does indeed makes the world go round, not just because He created and set the latter spinning on its axis, but because He designed life to be lived at its best, sustained to its fullest, and to flourish at its richest when love is at its centrality.4-7
This week, I have opted to take the lazy way, showcasing a few veterans of the Faith who have proven expertise in this arena so they can do their thing (no need to reinvent the recipe when it has already been simmered, nicely seasoned, attractively garnished, and served with such style, humor and flourish)! While these may not address all relationships in existence (e.g. familial and parental love), they do cover a fair gamut of romantic and other relationships, including wisdom for the single, married, younger, older, amateur, skillful, etc. Please sit back and enjoy a few of my favorite Word waiters and waitresses in this regard, alongside a couple of professionally inspiring short clips. Bon appétit!
