… to the right and the left you will BURST OUT … waters will BURST FORTH in the wilderness, and streams in the desert … (Isaiah 54:3a; 35:6)
Last week, we examined the Red Sea “STRETCH” and its connection to the fifty-fourth book of Isaiah. Always fascinated by the various nuances words convey, I was delighted to learn about the variegated connotations packed into the third verse of the latter. Different Bible versions elucidate varying points of emphasis on this territory-taking injunction – “For you shall expand to the right and the left … you will increase and spread out in every direction … Spread out! Think Big! … you will soon be bursting at the seams! … you will break out on the right and the left … you … will take over! … you will expand your boundaries on all sides …“1
All of God’s actions and instructions leading up to Israel’s adventure at the Red Sea culminated in that epic event: the emancipatory opening up of the waters to reveal a solid pathway for embarking on exciting and expansive excursions! Isaiah divulged the ultimate goal of that grandiloquent passage; it connected them to the next phase of their destiny, destroyed the opposition, and provided a convenient and revolutionary avenue out of harm’s way. The supernatural route was not merely an escape from Pharaoh and his minions; it served as a means of crossing over to take over. Their transition to the other side was as preconceived as it was strategic – they were crossing over to take over the territories God had bequeathed to them.2
Few elements on earth are as engulfing and pervasive as water, especially when it has broken loose of its constraining boundaries. Unrestrained, it has a massive impact everywhere it goes, permeating and submerging everything it encounters. It takes over every terrain it touches. Similarly, God-empowered individuals can burst out like tidal waves or seismic tsunamis to completely take over their spheres of society so God can be seen, known, and honored through them!3
God has an ultimate goal for the tumultuous transitions life throws your way! When you give your life to Jesus and follow His lead, He ensures liberation from the tyrannical situations you have endured so you can enjoy immersive and expansive enlargement at their expense! At His bidding, you can step into the unlikely path He opens up for you amid raging waters! Advance, raise, stretch, and expand to the other side of your challenges so you can appropriate new spiritual, cultural, professional, financial, familial, and other global domains! Cross over to take over new territories!
